The Rule of 5
On my way to the office this morning I was listening to a great personal growth CD from John Maxwell on maximizing your leadership. On it he was talking about what he calls the Rule Of 5, and I thought it was a great lesson for us all to think about and learn from. So here you go.
Imagine that you and I had a tree to cut down, and that it was the most important thing for us to accomplish in our lives. Each day we decided to take our axe and take 5 swings at that tree, consistently, every single day until that tree fell. After a while we would look at that tree, lying on the ground and know that our consistent effort led to the accomplishment of that goal.
So what is your tree? What is your goal? What is the most important thing that you do in your life to accomplish what you are trying to accomplish? To become what you are trying to become. That is the first question you have to ask.
Once you have identified that goal, that single most important thing, the you have to figure out what are the top 5 things that you must do every single day that will get you to where you want to go. If you are not doing those things then you must develop a plan to start doing them, every single day. Wake up in the morning and know that you must take 5 swings at that goal today. get yourself awake and alive focused on what is important and get on it. you most likely already know what those 5 things are, maybe you are doing them, if not time to get on it.
Quick illustration, let’s say you’re a salesperson and your main goal is to close 20 sales in one month. What must you do consistently each and every single day to accomplish your goal. I would say that your rule of 5 would be to get on the phones and prospect, lead follow up, appointments, personal growth (for your mindset), and closing sales. If you find yourself doing anything else, check back in to what is important and get on it.
Ok, time for me to pick up my axe!

Great post - Highlights 2 points.
Maxwell is a self proclaimed regurgitator of ideas. This one is a great one, I’ve heard from Canfield and others. Take 5 things, complete those every day, like eating an elephant, etc.
It’s not a bad thing that this stuff comes up over and over again, because we need constant reminding that it’s the small battles that you win everyday that’s going to help you complete your goals and dreams!
